Feeding Your Horse This Winter

As the season changes and the days become cooler, it’s essential you’re aware of the changes to your horse’s management and feeding.

Horses need to eat at least 1.5% of their body weight a day.

This is trickier in winter as the quality of the pasture is significantly reduced.

It’s worth feeding your horses extra hay on colder days or rainy nights to ensure they’re receiving all the nutrients and fibre they need.

You should monitor their water intake too. It’ll naturally decline in the colder months, which puts your horse at risk of dehydration.

Horses prefer to drink water between 7° and 20°, so it may be worth leaving their water in a sunny spot during winter.
